Are SUVs Evil?

As you might remember, I’m shopping around for a new (used) car.

One thing I’ve noticed is that SUVs are ridiculously cheap right now. Much cheaper than the subcompact models I had been considering.

Now, I’m not especially attracted to SUVs and I don’t often haul stuff around, but let me play devil’s advocate: I’ve run the numbers, and with the low amount of miles I drive, I’d come out financially a couple grand ahead with an SUV vs. a more expensive compact car after two years (even assuming $5/gal gas).

It seems like SUVs are selling for less than they’re worth right now because everyone’s gone crazy over gas prices. Everyone wants a Prius or a Civic.

Should I consider bucking the trend in order to save some money? Do we really think gas prices are going to remain this high?

When the rest of the country zigs, should you zag?

It’s all about NPV (net present value). If you’ve run the numbers, I’d go for it.

Homosexual discrimination is nothing compared to the people who will be sneering your way for guzzling gas anywhere near them.

How many years did you estimate for total use? It’s hard to believe the savings upfront justifies it.

I recently have looked at the same thing. SUV’s that were $49k *LAST YEAR* are now selling for ~$25-29k. However- there are two things that bother me. A) Even though I only drive about 2,000 miles a year, I would still *feel* guilty about using more gas/polluting more than necessary. B) When I want to resell it, it may have absolutely no residual value- especially if gas goes up to $7.

So, if I can afford to buy it now and get nothing for it when it’s time to sell, it’s still only a “maybe” for me. And if I can afford that much, maybe I should just get a car that’s better for the planet/humanity, and won’t make me feel guilty.

Oh, and there’s the indignation of everyone around me to contend with- that surely won’t help my mood while driving.

I see where you are going with this… and you know I like the way you think, but

    A. I do not think that gas prices are going to go down, I think they will continue to go up.
    B. Won’t it still be painful to pay $90-$100 to fill up your tank, even if you don’t have to do it very much?
    C. It’s sooooo risky, lol and it just seems wrong (probably for the reasons that everyone else has already said.

But, you are a risk-taker and I’m sure your “numbers” speak for themselves.
