Hey Citi, What We Have Here, is a Failure to Communicate

I’m trying to close my Citibank online savings account in favor of my newer and easier-to-use ING Direct account.

Citibank seems to think they can prevent customers from closing their accounts by ignoring the issue. I can’t find a single help article mentioning the account closure process, and it’s not in their FAQs. In the end, I had to send an email.

In the web world, we call this “poor user experience.”

WTF mate?

    Call them and put up with the “high pressure” retention client. You can do it!

    “No, I’m not happy with Citi’s various high interest rates.”
    “No, I would not like Citi to give me a $50 gift certificate to my favorite retailer, even if it is Lacoste.”
    “No, I would not like Citi to buy me a Bimmer.” (DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT!)

    It’s not often that I laugh out loud at a flash video online, but that one is a favorite.

    A lot of companies won’t let you cancel online, and they won’t give you explicit cancellation instructions. I guess it sounds like 2 hours on hold for customer service and then, like Corinne said, another hour of shady retention reps. “JUST CLOSE THE DAMN ACCOUNT!!!”

    Also, did you see the Lacoste semi-annual sail on slickdeals.net the other day? Thought about you. :P

    Bleh. They probably want to make sure you can talk to a retention agent. Online, they’d have to put up those annoying “Are you sure?” “Do you REALLY want to close your account” popups.

    Yeah… I agree with Mrs. Micah… I was in the same situation. You’ll call… they’ll ask “are you sure you want to close your account?” “Are you sure you’re sure?” “Are you really sure?”. In the end… you’ll close your account, and it probably won’t be closed. I still get email regarding my phantom Citi savings account. I supposedly closed it 6 months ago!

    @Chris I am fighting very strong urges. I spent way too much money on Lacoste in April. And I didn’t have to wait for slickdeals, I get the email newsletter lol

    @Mrs Micah & @tom I didn’t get a response to my email today, I guess I will have to call after all. Holy hell.
